AUSTIN —A man died in connection to a garage fire early Thanksgiving morning.
The Austin Fire Department responded to a fire on the 1900 block of Oakland Avenue East around 8:50 a.m. Thursday and arrived after people living in the house had pulled the victim out of the garage, according to Fire Chief Jim McCoy. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death was not yet known and an autopsy is planned for today. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
Damage from the fire was estimated at $11,000. While there weren’t many flames from the fire, McCoy said there was a good amount of smoke as a couch and chair had burned.
“It was a smaller fire,” McCoy said.
