Salvation Army food pantry demand is up
Published Thursday, August 13, 2009
The Salvation Army of Albert Lea has seen a significant increase in its community services, particularly their food pantry.
In July alone, the organization distributed over 14,000 pounds of food to needy families. For the first six months of this year, the local Salvation Amry distributed about 68,000 pounds.
“Our service increased to follow the economic trend,” said Capt. Jim Brickson, pastor and administrator of the Albert Lea Corps.
The shelves are getting bare and the Salvation Army is making a plea to the community to help fill them back up. The trying times has affected everyone, not to leave the Salvation Army out in the dark.
To help in the need, Zion Lutheran Church has teamed up with the Salvation Army for supplying food items and volunteer help in the new community meal site, Our Daily Bread.
Meals are served on Tuesday evenings at 5 p.m. and on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. at 302 Court St. Without the help of Zion Lutheran, the Salvation Army would find it hard to get all that is required to provide the meal to the community.
