People charged with pig abuse are sentenced

Published Sunday, June 28, 2009

JEFFERSON, Iowa — Four people charged with abusing pigs at a farm near Bayard in western Iowa have pleaded guilty and been sentenced to probation.

Richard Ralston, Alan Rettig, Greg Hackler and Jordan Anderson were sentenced this week in Green County District Court. They were charged after the abuse was uncovered by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The group released a graphic video of the abuse in 2008.

The men were employees at the farm, which is owned by MowMar Farms LLP of Fairmont and supplies Hormel Foods Corp. of Austin.

A fifth man, Shawn Lyons, pleaded guilty in January and was sentenced to probation.

All the men, except for Anderson, were prohibited from working with livestock during their probation.

Probation? wow that will teach them not to do that again!

I would think at a minimum they would have lost their jobs.

I agree that the video's "Appeared!" that the pigs were being mistreated and granted, the workers were letting their stress get the better of them. But I challenge anyone who knows nothing about pigs to go try and move them from one place to another...especially caged pigs that are bred for slaughter in the fastest manner possible with little human contact until it's time to move them.
Stop eating Bacon, Sausage, and Pork Products if you're so concerned about the animal, then they won't have to raise all those pigs to feed you!

On second thought, please don't take me up on that challenge...you would come out with bites, bruises, the loss of a limb or possibly your life.
These are strong, mean, and dangerous creatures people.

Some people need to tend to things that they understand and leave that in which they have no knowledge alone.

Probation was fair, losing their jobs was not.
Did the company suffer any consequences? A little more education on how to handle pigs (ie: properly trained employees) could have prevented that whole mess.
