Suhai, left, and Aaron Boyer plan to open Tex-Mex Taco House, located on Clark Street near Broadway Avenue, later this month. The restaurant will feature both American and Mexican food.

Tex-Mex Taco House features about six tables and a bar with stools, chili pepper lights and a few Texas decor items.

Aaron Boyer walks through the kitchen at Tex Mex Taco House on Friday. At the time they were still waiting for a few items for the kitchen, in hopes of opening soon.
A little bit American. A little bit Mexican.
That’s the idea behind the new Tex-Mex Taco House opening up later this month on Clark Street.
When the restaurant, owned by Aaron and Suhai Boyer, opens, it will be the seventh restaurant in town offering Mexican food.
While all of the other Mexican restaurants in Albert Lea are mainly in operation for lunch and dinner, the Boyers said their restaurant will be open for breakfast and lunch, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There will be foods such as breakfast tacos with bacon, Mexican sausage or potato and egg, refried beans, toast, and pancakes to name a few of the options.
For lunch there will be offerings such as tacos, gorditas, chicken salad and hamburgers, and people can request special-order tamales.
Homemade tortillas will be used, and customers will be served chips and salsa while their order is being made.
Suhai said the project has been a couple years in the making. She had a restaurant similar to it in Texas and wanted to try something new in Albert Lea.
Aaron works at Dave Syverson Auto Mall, and the couple has four children.
Aaron said he and his father, Scott Boyer, own a few downtown buildings, of which the Tex-Mex Taco House, 115 E. Clark St., is one.
The couple said they hope their restaurant will provide more eating options for employees at Albert Lea Medical Center and other downtown businesses. They noted they are not too worried about starting up a Mexican restaurant less than a block away from The Taco King on the corner of Broadway Avenue and Clark Street, as they believe each restaurant offers different foods.
Aaron said the building has been completely renovated, with new tile, paint, furniture and decorations. Wi-Fi will be available for customers.
The restaurant has space to expand in the building in case Boyers choose to do so down the road.
Suhai said when the business first gets going, it will be run mainly by herself and other family members from both sides.
“We want to know our clients by their name,” she said.
Look for a sign on the outside of the building to let people know that the restaurant is open. The Boyers said it will open mid-November.
Other restaurants offering Mexican food in Albert Lea are The Taco King and Taco Bell downtown, Casa Zamora and Taco John’s on East Main Street and Plaza Morena and La Guadalupana at Northbridge Mall.

Nothing's "stopping" you from "eating" somewhere else, "whocares84."
On that note - is this in the old Chef Cafe location? I remember it being on Clark, but I don't recall exactly where.

The Chef Cafe...wow, that conjures up some great memories. The Pappas family serving up good food and a friendly atmosphere. Has there ever been one of those 'historical' pieces by Ed done about them?

Congrats!!
Can't wait, one more good reason to travel to Albert Lea.
Whocares what Whocares84 thinks. Person missed the 'Headline' ...
A Little Bit American, A Little Bit Mexican., What else is there?

savypro, it tells me more about you than it does about Albert Lea. I would guess it mostly means Mexican food is popular here. I know I enjoy it.
We have three Chinese restaurants, too. Care to comment about that?

I wish them the best of luck. I like Mexican food, it just doesn't like me unless it's the mild kind.

Ya it is old chef cafe. The inside looks nice from the pics. The sign and the area behind it looks good to, alot better then the old blue plywood. From what I heard that they are the old chef cafe signs that were there before. Hope they do well. I know I will be there when they open

Thanks skills.
I always wondered what happened to the old signs for that place.
I was only ever in there once, some time around 1979 or 1980, on my way home from the library. I wanted to buy a treat that was something different then Merrill's popcorn, where I usually stopped. I remember buying a cake donut. The waitress asked if I wanted a pop and I told her "No thanks, I only have enough for the donut." She gave me a pop on the house anyway, so I gave her whatever my change was as a tip.
That said, I am interested in trying this place when it opens. I don't think I've ever been to a Tex-Mex place before, so this should be interesting.

whocares84 -> May I suggest Tex-Mex Taco House opening up later this month on Clark Street to satisfy your desire for "a nice family restaurant where everyone" can eat?
Sure sounds like Tex-Mex Taco House is trying to meet the needs of 21st century tastes. My hope is that they have "Vitality" menu options that are low-glycemic and utilize locally grown products when available.
Count me in as testing and trying Tex-Mex out!
btw... best of luck to savypro. You and whocares84 sure appear to need it. May I suggest a short walk down to the library after your lunch to catch up on some of what you are missing?
