Slow start hurts Vikings football
Published Friday, October 16, 2009
The Northwood-Kensett football team knew it had to beat NU High Thursday to claim a share of the district title, but the Vikings also knew they had to be aware of the NU High’s potent offensive attack.
The Panthers (8-0, 6-0 Class A, District 3) got two big plays in the first half and held off a Northwood-Kensett comeback for a 17-14 win.
“We’re disappointed, no doubt about it,” said Vikings head coach Dave Capitani. “We knew it was a game we could win. We just can’t afford to dig ourselves holes against good football teams.”
NU High connected for two long pass plays, one a 70-yard touchdown pass in the first half, but the Northwood-Kensett defense shut the Panthers down the rest of the way.
Tyson Werner scored twice for the Vikings in the second half, but Northwood-Kensett wasn’t able to get any closer.
Capitani said his team had its chances early in the game, but two drives stalled inside of NU High’s 10-yard line.
The Vikings travel to face Rockford next Friday.
