Stores unite Albert Lea Spanish speakers

Published Monday, October 19, 2009

Aside from similar Mexican foods, El Tio Pancho also carries candies that are frequently used for parties. They also sell ceramic dishes and mariachi piggy banks.

They also have Mexican shampoos and a few personal care items, plus nuts, soups, teas and dried items as well.

Jacinto Grajales, owner of El Jarocho Market on East Main Street, is also active in the community and hosts some events at his market.

Aside from a few car cruises at the market over the summer, Grajales said they could also host an event for Cinco de Mayo. They also held an event at the store on Saturday.

Grajales said the biggest difference in his market from grocery stores like Hy-Vee is the products.

“What’s different is we only sell Mexican products. That’s the difference,” said Jacinto Grajales.

El Jarocho also sells fresh baked breads and rolls. They also sell different spices and different products including ground and dried to be used in soups and different items.

Much of the store is similar to grocery stores like Hy-Vee, and El Jarocho has a small deli with meats and cheeses, only from a Mexican company. Like other stores, they have canned goods and candies, but they often have Spanish writing on them.

Aside from El Tio Pancho and El Jarocho, El Padrino is open on South Broadway Avenue, and Dos Hermanos Mexican Store is set to open soon on Main Street.

savypro do something about it..you don't have to like they are opening another store. But Albert Lea has a big mexican population. So there is a need for mexican stores..you don't have to go there and shop.I shop at them all the time. For one reason they do have stuff other stores don't for cooking.I myself enjoy mexican food and enjoy cooking it also.People are so closed minded here in Albert Lea it's really sad. This is america land of the free. They have a right to have and run as many stores as they want.

Not all people of Mexican descent are illegal.

it is land of the free, however you must be here legally. And as much as you may wish all of the local hispanic pop. is legally residing in Albert Lea, you must accept the fact that stores like these provide a local haven and make it even harder to get those who are hear illegally to asimilate.

speaking of illegals, why hasn't there been any news on the recent bust at Select Foods?????

Susan what you said indicates to me that you MUST think that there are illegal Mexicans living in this country so if what you say is true what do you think we should do about the illegal ones? Just say Oh well???

there were many illegal Mexicans working at Select Foods, there was a bust there just a few weeks ago. Funny how this hasn't hit the news isn't it? Who is covering up this story? People need to know what our local businesses are guilty of, don't you agree?

Bornfree- Yes I understand that there are people who reside here illegally. Please don't assume that I am indifferent to this situation. I was commenting on the fact that just because someone is of Mexican decent, does not mean they are illegally here. The story was about a store. It seems that any time the word "Mexican" is brought up in a sentence some people assume that somehow it is connected to illegal immigration. The story was NOT about that.
