Phil Haug continues to prove his appearance in the state high school boys’ golf tournament was no fluke.
He’s definitely among the best in the state.
Haug, a 1999 Albert Lea High School graduate and the Tigers’ only state qualifier this spring, finished on top of the Series D standings in the Minnesota Junior PGA Tour that concluded last week.
Haug finished the six-tournament series by placing second at St. Cloud Country Club last Monday, giving him the series championship by 25 points over the second-place finisher. Haug entered Monday’s tournament tied atop the series standings with Ben Grieve, the 1999 Class AA state co-champion.
According to Haug’s father, Miles, it was consistency that allowed him to take the title.
After opening the series by placing first at Golden Valley Country Club on June 14, Haug placed fourth at The Links at North Fork in Ramsey June 22, third at Sawmill Golf Course in Stillwater July 7, fifth at White Bear Lake’s Oneka Ridge July 14 and fifth at Faribault Country Club July 22.
Haug shot a 76 Monday, one stroke behind the medalist.
&uot;It was consistency, obviously, that was able to get him that point standing,&uot; said Miles Haug. &uot;We’re fired up. We’re pretty happy.&uot;
Haug’s accomplishments give him the opportunity to play in several other tournaments.
