Kraig Westendorf started thinking about perfection in the fifth frame, but he kept his cool.
He had been there before.
And he got there again.
Westendorf rolled the second 300 game of his career, becoming Albert Lea’s first bowler of the 1999-2000 season to score a perfect game during league competition at Holiday Lanes. It happened in September during the Switch-A-Rues League.
Westendorf went on to finish with a career-best series of 791, surpassing his previous high of 766 shot in April of 1996 at the American Bowling Congress Tournament in Salt Lake City.
Westendorf, who’s been bowling for 21 years, also rolled a 300 game in October of 1995. He currently bowls once a week, carrying an average of 235 per game.
&uot;I started thinking about 300 in the fifth frame,&uot; commented Westendorf. &uot;Both lanes played nearly the same. I was lined up and felt that if I was close to my mark on the lane that my chances of striking were high.&uot;
Westendorf was Albert Lea’s Bowler of the Year for the 1993-94 season.
In other recent action at Holiday Lanes, high school bowler Matt Entorf registered a career-best 295 game on his way to a personal-best 677 series in October.
Unlike Westendorf, Entorf admitted he started getting nervous after six consecutive strikes in his flirt with 300. He shot nine consecutive strikes before missing in the 10th frame.
&uot;The most nerve-racking shot was the first ball of the 10th,&uot; said Entorf. &uot;When I threw my first ball, I knew it wasn’t good enough. But I still had fun.&uot;
Entorf has bowled for seven years and had a previous best 279 game and 650 series last year. He carries a 182 average at this time.
Among Entorf’s goals are to average 200 this season and record a 700 series. His career coals include a 230 average and an 800 series.
