Sue Callahan of the Community Education based Youth Development and Service program came up with the idea and presented it to the High School Student Council, said student council advisor Cindy Fjermestad. Council members liked the idea and made a competition out of it, asking their peers to donate as much as they could and to bring those donations to their third period classes, Fjermestad said. The students of the class who donated the most were to be awarded for their efforts with a pizza party at school, courtesy of the student council.

The collection was made between Nov. 15 and the 23, with a total donation of $179 and 120 blankets and sleeping bags. Student council members delivered the blankets and money to the Community Action Agency and the Salvation Army Wednesday.

&uot;We were happy to see the students give so generously,&uot; said CAA family development coordinator Linda Lares. &uot;It’s nice to know that families in need will stay a little warmer this winter.&uot;

CAA provides family assistance to Freeborn County residents, Lares said.

Mrs. Brownlow’s third-hour Spanish 2 class was enjoying pizza on the student council’s tab Wednesday after coming up with the largest contribution, Fjermestad said.
