GLENVILLE – With a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, it looked like the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines were on their way to a lop-sided victory.
The Lake Mills Bulldogs had other ideas.
The Bulldogs refused to fold, taking the Wolverines to the wire before falling 51-49 in an interstate boys’ basketball battle at Glenville Monday night.
&uot;It was tough,&uot; said Wolverines coach Jeff Rayman. &uot;I’m just happy with our kids’ all-around play.&uot;
It was the third win in a row for the Wolverines, who improved to 7-9 overall.
Though the Wolverines maintained the lead, with scores of 22-18 at halftime and 36-28 after three quarters, the Bulldogs were in it until the end.
A basket by Seth Stadheim put the Wolverines up by two late in the fourth quarter, and they had a chance to add to the lead at the free-throw line with 5 seconds remaining. A miss gave Lake Mills one last chance, but a three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim.
&uot;We played good defense,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;And we came through in the end.&uot;
Paul Kleven led a balanced attack for the Wolverines, with 14 points. Stadheim had 12 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals, Nick Flatness 11 points and eight rebounds.
&uot;Nick played one of his better games of the year,&uot; said Rayman.
Richie Mathis came off the bench to contribute six points and three assists. Adam Bremer continued his strong play on the boards, with a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points.
Scott Gaskill led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Derek Nelson scored 10.
The Bulldogs host North Kossuth in nonconference play tonight. The Wolverines travel to LeRoy-Ostrander Thursday for a Southeast Conference game.
