The Albert Lea Tigers were playing their second doubleheader in as many days, and the Owatonna Huskies hadn’t played since Monday.

The Tigers finished the day short on pitching, a little fatigued and two games worse off in the standings, losing 7-6 and 8-3 in a Big Nine baseball doubleheader at Owatonna Friday.

&uot;Boy, that’s tiring,&uot; said Tigers coach Joe Sczublewski.

The first game was also very frustrating.

The Tigers played brilliant defense at times, turning three double plays and making some fine running catches, and they outhit the Huskies 9-8, but a wild pitch and an error allowed the winning runs to score in the bottom of the seventh.

&uot;It was a tough loss,&uot; said Sczublewski. &uot;We showed flashes of excellence, sprinkled in with some plays we didn’t make that we should have made.&uot;

Adam Hamberg pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. He walked six and struck out five. Isaiah Parry faced the final batter.

&uot;Adam pitched a pretty good ballgame,&uot; said Sczublewski. &uot;He cruised through the first five innings but threw a lot of pitches in the sixth and tired toward the end.&uot;

Adam Highum was 3-for-3 to lead the offense. Alan Attig was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. David Dahl, Andy Drenth, Phil Wacholz and Hamberg had one hit each.

Parry started on the mound in game two and was not sharp, allowing eight runs, five of them earned. Dahl did not allow a hit through the last 2 2/3 innings.

The game was close until the fourth, when Owatonna plated five runs to break it open.

The Tigers’ only hit came with two outs in the seventh, when Adam Hanson singled to drive in a run.

The Tigers, 3-5, have another busy week coming up. They play at Mankato East Monday, host Mankato West Tuesday and entertain Faribault in a doubleheader Thursday.
