WELLS – Once the clouds parted and the skies cleared, it was one of the nicest days the United South Central boys’ track and field team has seen all spring.
It was yet another nice showing for the Rebels.
The USC boys topped the eight-team field in their own Lions Invitational at Wells Tuesday, totaling 130 points. A strong Maple River squad was second with 115.5.
Jake Courrier was a double winner for the Rebels and the biggest winner on the day, taking first in the shot put and discus to earn the John Drugg Award as the outstanding weight man in the meet.
Another highlight for USC was the effort of Adam Korn, who won the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds to tie the meet record.
Also finishing first for the Rebels were Jeff Goeden; 1600; Casey Christenson, 400; and Matt Theede, 800.
Theede, Goeden, Tim Rauenhorst and Eric Langsev were second the 4×800 relay. Britt Wegner, Bob Schmitz, Bob Christenson and Langsev took third in the sprint medley. Korn, Luke Hill, Brandon Alphs and Wegner were fourth in the 4×100.
Other USC places: Brandon Aukes, second, 110 hurdles; Casey Christenson, fifth, triple jump; Justin Youngblom, second, 1600; Dusty Niebuhr, fifth, 300 hurdles; Jon Voigt, fifth, 800; Alphs, third, long jump; and Jake Stenzel, fourth, 3200.
The Rebels host the Section 2A True Team Meet Thursday, May 10 at Wells. The winner advances to state.
