There were two outs in the bottom of the final inning and the Albert Lea High School baseball team trailed by two runs.
It was not too late for a comeback.
Phil Wacholz coaxed a walk on a 3-2 count and, one pitch later, Andy Drenth connected for a home run, lifting the Tigers past Rochester John Marshall 3-2 in a Big Nine game at Hayek Field Tuesday.
&uot;It was just fun, a fun game,&uot; said ALHS coach Joe Sczublewski. &uot;The kids played the way they’re capable of playing against an excellent opponent. Hopefully, this will give us a good boost.&uot;
Junior left-hander Isaac Walton gave the Tigers what Sczublewski called their best pitching performance of the year. He allowed only four hits and one walk, striking out nine.
The Tigers didn’t score until the sixth, when Alan Attig walked with two outs, stole second and came home on a double off the fence by Adam Hamberg.
The other Albert Lea hits were by David Dahl, Travis Miller and Isaiah Parry.
The Tigers, 6-8 overall and 5-7 in the Big Nine, travel to Austin Thursday and host Rochester Century in a doubleheader Friday.
