GLENVILLE – The New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers took one of the best volleyball win-loss records in the area to Glenville Monday night.
They left with an unexpected loss.
Glenville-Emmons pulled off a 3-0 upset, winning 15-13, 15-13, 15-12.
&uot;This is a real big win for us,&uot; said Wolverines coach Craig Rayman. &uot;We know of their record, we’ve been following them, and they’ve been playing well. They’re a good team.&uot;
The Panthers were 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the Gopher Conference – having lost only to Bethlehem Academy, rated No. 5 in Class A – and they finished second in the conference last year. The Wolverines, who started 1-3 this fall, improved to 11-7 overall.
While the Wolverines moved to the Southeast Conference last year – when they lost 3-0 at NRHEG – the schools have maintained a rivalry in volleyball and other sports.
&uot;I think there’s still a rivalry,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;You know the last five or six years, whenever you play New Richland you’re going to be in for a battle.&uot;
Monday’s match was exciting from the start, especially at the end of a pivotal game two. The difference was the Wolverines’ consistency and the Panthers’ lack thereof.
&uot;They had a few hitting errors tonight that I think they don’t normally have,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;It probably wasn’t their best match. But our gals played well.&uot;
Alisa Rayman, the second daughter to play for Coach Rayman, led the wolverines with 14 kills. She was 14-for-16 serving.
Other Glenville-Emmons statistics: Megan Avery, 10-for-12 serving, two aces, 13 kills; Jill Delger, 8-for-10 serving; Jill Yost, 16-for-16 serving; Jenna Brackey, 13-for-13 serving, 19 set assists; Katie Brackey, 12-for-14 serving, 18 assists.
Both teams are on the road tonight, the Wolverines at Grand Meadow and the Panthers at Medford.
