The Riverland women’s basketball team got a glipse of the future, and head coach Suzy Hebrink liked what she saw.
The Lady Blue Devils went deep into their shallow bench Wednesday night against Mid-State Technical College, reeling in a 79-69
non-conference victory at home. The Riverland roster of eight players dwindled to five after three key performers fouled out, leaving two sophomores and three freshmen on the floor.
Three first-year players responded well in helping Riverland hold off a persistent Mid-State squad. Tanya Jensen and Stephanie
Vollbrecht, who played high school basketball together at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, scored eight points apiece, and Hayfield graduate Katie Berg chipped in four second-half points in a come-from-behind Blue Devil victory.
Riverland played what Coach Hebrink considered its &uot;worst defensive first half&uot; of the season, and found themselves down 39-30 at the break. The Devils fought back with 49 points in the second half while limiting MSTC to 30 for the comeback win.
Men: RCC 89, Mid-State 79
Riverland’s men’s basketball team ended the first half on a 7-0 run and kept the momentum in its home court in a 89-79 non-conference win over Mid-State Technical College Wednesday night in Austin.
The Blue Devils (3-2) held off everything Mid-State Tech (6-4) could throw at them in the second half, and built up the necessary lead to
do so in the first half.
Riverland fell behind 12-3 in the early going but fired back to take their first lead, 19-18, with 10 minutes remaining in the half. Back-to-back three-point plays by freshman center Jake Bettis brought the Devils to a 34-27 lead Riverland staked out a 48-33 lead by halftime.
