They’re more than willing to work overtime.

The Wolverines went to double-overtime to defeat New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 73-71 in the fifth-place game of the Southland Rebel Classic at Adams Saturday night.

&uot;It was our third overtime game this week, and we won all three,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;You have to compliment the kids for continuing to fight back.&uot;

At 5-1, the Wolverines are off to one of their best starts ever.

Saturday’s game started and ended close. The Wolverines were up 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, trailed 30-27 at halftime and led 51-41 after three periods. It was 58-58 at the end of regulation, when the Panthers missed a free throw that could have won it, and 64-64 after the first overtime.

Paul Kleven had a big night for the Wolverines, with 34 points, four assists and two steals. Chase Rayman had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Richie Mathis 12 points and eight assists, Zach Adams eight points and six rebounds, Nick Flatness five points and 11 rebounds.

Coach Rayman said Maurice Chessmore contributed some key minutes off the bench and had a big rebound in the second overtime.

Isaiah Lundberg led NRHEG with 17 points. Dusty Davis scored 15, Michael Hullopeter 13.

&uot;Give New Richland credit,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;They battled hard all the way. They’ve got a nice club, Matt (Eppen) is a good coach, and I’m sure they’ll have success this season.&uot;

The Wolverines return to Southeast Conference play Tuesday at Glenville against Houston. The Panthers travel to LeCenter for a nonconference game Tuesday.
