GLENVILLE – Eight-and-one, three-and-0.
Jeff Rayman paused after the words, as if to let them sink in.
&uot;Have I ever been able to say that?&uot; asked Rayman.
The answer was no. At least not about his team.
Rayman’s Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball squad picked up where it left off before the holidays, defeating Lyle/Austin Pacelli 60-49 in a Southeast Conference game at Glenville Thursday night. It improved the Wolverines’ best start ever to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
It did take them a while to get going, though, as they trailed 9-8 after one quarter and 22-21 at halftime. A 17-5 run in the third period proved to be the difference.
&uot;You could tell we had been off for the holidays,&uot; said Rayman.&uot;
But the Wolverines were tough defensively despite being in foul trouble most of the second half. Paul Kleven and Richie Mathis combined to hold Lyle/Pacelli’s leading scorer Andy Boisjolie to 13 points; he was averaging more than 20.
Kleven led the offense with 25 points, four assists and three steals. Nick Flatness had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Chase Rayman 10 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and two blocked shots. Mathis added six points and five assists.
The loss dropped Lyle/Pacelli’s record to 1-8.
The Wolverines travel to LeRoy-Ostrander Tuesday for what Coach Rayman called a key game against one of the preseason conference favorites.
Said Rayman, &uot;We’re really looking forward to Tuesday night’s game.&uot;
