Weekend planner: Easter activities, theater on schedule

The award-winning drama “To Kill A Mockingbird” is on the stage at the Albert Lea Civic Theatre this weekend.

The story takes place in the summer of 1935, and a young girl and her brother in a quiet Southern town is about to experience the dramatic events that are about to affect the rest of her life. Her widowed attorney father is defending a young black man wrongfully accused of a grave crime.

Curtain time for the Albert Lea Community Theatre production is 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday. The box office number is 377-4371.

Following is a roundup of other area events going on this weekend:

Friday, March 29

– The kindergarten through sixth-grade elementary/middle school art exhibit continues at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon-4 p.m. Students’ works from Albert Lea elementary classes, Alden-Conger Elementary, St. Theodore’s and Glenville- Emmons are on display.

– The Albert Lea Community Theatre production of “To Kill A Mockingbird” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea Civic Theatre. For tickets, call the box office at 377-4371.

Saturday, March 30

– Rainbow Foods will have an Easter egg hunt at 7:30 a.m. for children ages 1-8. There will be juice, coffee and cookies, and lots of prizes.

– The kindergarten through sixth-grade elementary/middle school art exhibit concludes at the Albert Lea Art Center. Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Students’ works from Albert Lea elementary classes, Alden-Conger Elementary, St. Theodore’s and Glenville- Emmons are on display.

– Myre-Big Island State Park will host “Maple Syruping in Your Backyard” at 1 p.m. People are invited to participate in one of the annual rites of spring. Listen to the history of maple syruping, take a hike to the “sugarbush” to see sap being collected, tap a tree, stop at the sugar shack to the see the boiling process, and finish it off with a sample of the syrup. The program will run about 1 1/2 hours. Dress for the weather and be prepared for muddy conditions, as the parking lot is beginning to thaw. The program is free and open to the public. However, a state park vehicle permit is required on all vehicles and can be purchased at the park office. For more information, call the park office at 379-3403.

Sunday, March 31

– Grace Lutheran Youth Ministries of Albert Lea is sponsoring an Easter breakfast from 7-10 a.m. The public is invited to enjoy a full breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, muffins and drinks. A $4 donation is suggested. Aid Association for Lutherans branch #188 will match funds. Grace Lutheran Church is located at 918 Garfield Ave., Albert Lea. – The youths of Glenville First Lutheran Church will host an Easter breakfast with rolls, muffins, eggs, sausage, juice and coffee from 7:30-8:45 a.m. Freewill donations will be matched up to $450 by Lutheran Brotherhood, Stateline Branch #8972.

– Central Freeborn Lutheran Church Luther League is having an Easter breakfast at 8 a.m. at the church. Proceeds will go toward the bell restoration projects for North and Central Freeborn churches. Matching funds will be provided by Aid Association for Lutherans Branch #6910.
