Weekend Planner: Gala for Riverland Saturday

The Albert Lea Campus Foundation’s annual Gala Event, a scholarship fund-raiser for students attending Riverland Community College’s Albert Lea campus, will be held from 8 p.m.-midnight Saturday, April 27, at the Albert Lea Armory. There will be live music, hors d’oeuvres, dancing to the music of The Fantastic Convertibles, and a silent auction. Beer and wine are included for the ticket price of $40 per person. A cash bar is also available. Last year’s Gala raised over $35,000 and helped provide 60 local scholarships totaling $34,700. This year’s theme is &uot;Champion Our Climb to Learning.&uot; Tickets for the Gala are available at all three Andersen Hallmark Stores in Albert Lea or at the reception desk at the college.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend:
Friday, April 26
– The Albert Lea Just For Kix Program will hold its spring show in the Southwest Middle School gymnasium. There will be a 5:30 p.m. show and a 7:30 p.m. show. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children 5 and over.
Saturday, April 27
– The Albert Lea Area Youth Choir will present a concert at 7 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The choir, directed by Eileen Nelson Ness, will sing sacred and secular pieces. The choir is comprised of students from the Albert Lea, Freeborn, Hollandale and Hayward areas. The students range in age from third grade to eighth grade. Gail Thurnau is the accompanist. The choir has sung for several events this spring and their final performance of the season is this concert. The concert is free and open to the public.
Sunday, April 28
– The MN/IA Border Woman-in-the-Shoe Doll Club will host a Doll, Teddy Bear and Toy Show from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Northbridge Mall. This is the second year the doll club has hosted the show, which will benefit the House of Hope, a facility to provide comfortable, convenient, affordable housing for Albert Lea Medical Center patients and their family members. While there is no charge to attend the doll, bear and toy show, for a $1 donation, people can get a chance on several prizes. A $5 donation buys six chances. Prizes are on display in the window outside Carlson Wagonlit Travel. There will be at least 50 tables of vendors with everything from antique to modern collectible dolls, bears, toys and related items. Exhibitors are coming from Wisconsin, Minneapolis, Iowa, South Dakota as well as locally. Doll appraisals will be offered from 1-3 p.m. with a cost of $3 per doll. – The Scotsman reunion (former Queens, Almco and foundry employees) will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Albert Lea Union Center. Those coming should bring a half dozen cookies or doughnuts to share, as well as memorabilia. Coffee will be served.
