The Albert Lea U-17 Classic 2 boys’ soccer team finished up the summer season with an 11-7 record, but that record doesn’t tell the whole story.
The U-17 boys’ team is actually made up of six U-17 players and 15 boys who moved up from the U-16 division they were eligible for.
For the season, the boys scored 61 goals and allowed only 31 in 17 games.
District play first featured a matchup against Rochester, with Albert Lea winning 11-0. Next up was a 2-0 win over Apple Valley. With only one game standing between Albert Lea and a trip to state, the boys had to face St. Peter which had beaten the locals twice in the regular season. With a heat index over 100 and only two reserves, Albert Lea still managed to put up a good fight before falling 4-2.
Scoring leaders for Albert Lea were Jeremy Jacobson with 21 goals, Jacob Clark with 10, Brett Plantage with eight, Justin McGinnis four, Tyler Wiese three, two each for Nick McPherson, Brady Plantage, Mitch Kortz, Taylor Zimmerman, Jamie Schreiber and Jake Levisen, and one each for Dustin Boyer, Sam Borland and Steve Thom.
Defensive leaders for Albert Lea were Joe Squires, Ross Habben, Andy Stapleton, and Brady Plantage and midfielders Man Olsen, Tim Westland, and Ben Frayne.
Goalies Eric Hutchison and Tyler Wiese shared time in the net, with five shutouts between them.
This same group of boys will start fall high school soccer this month.
