Weekend Planner: Ski show’s season to wind down

The Albert Lea Bayside Skiers Waterski Show team winds down its season this weekend with a special Labor Day show. Pre-show activities begin at 1 p.m. and the show at 2 p.m.
The club will be giving away T-shirts, Alliance Pipeline will give away can coolers, and Zogg Dermatology will give away sunscreen.
The Hy-Vee concession stand will serve Pepsi products and Schweigert hot dogs.
This year’s show is &uot;The Legend of Robin Hood &045; Sort Of,&uot; and includes such acts as human pyramids, conventional and strap doubles, trios, ballet line, men’s stomp line, barefoot skiing, wakeboarding and swivel skiing.
The club took its show to the Midwest Regional Water Ski Show Tournament in Waterloo, Iowa, in July, and the Division II Nationals in Rock Island, Ill., in August.
There is no charge to attend, but a freewill offering is received to help the club meet expenses.

Friday, Aug. 30
– Grand opening festivities will be held at the North Star of Iowa Corn Maze and Secret Garden from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission is $5, with children 5 and under admitted free. To get to the maze from Albert Lea, go south on Highway 65. Just north of Northwood, turn west on 490th Street, then go west on the blacktop for a sixteenth of a mile.
– The Pelican Breeze will hold a Friday night pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Call (507) 383-2630.
Saturday, Aug. 31
– The MI Arabian Horse Club will hold its annual Labor Day show at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Halter classes begin at 9 a.m. and performance classes about 12:30 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. Refreshments will be available on the grounds.
– The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market will be held in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street beginning at 9 a.m.
– Al Batt will give a presentation on birds and the art of bird watching beginning at 10 a.m. at Myre-Big Island State Park. Batt writes the weekly &uot;Nature’s World&uot; columns in the Albert Lea Tribune, is a regular contributor to &uot;Minnesota Birding,&uot; leads field trips and teaches classes on birding. The program will begin in the picnic shelter area followed by a bird hike in the park. Don’t forget your binoculars. In case of rain, a slide show will be presented inside the Interpretive Center. The program is free and open to the public, but a Minnesota State Park Vehicle Permit is required. For more information, call the park office at 379-3403.

Sunday, Sept. 1
– Golden K-1 Kiwanis members will host a Dad’s Belgian Waffle all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Albert Lea Armory. Tickets are available at the door and from Golden K-1 members for $5.50. Children 5 and under eat free.

– The season’s weekly free program of Live Music in the Park at Albert Lea’s Edgewater Park comes to a close with a concert by Luverne’s Concertina Band beginning at 1:30 p.m. The programs have been arranged by the American Federation of Musicians – Local 567 of Albert Lea. Funding has been provided by the Recording Industries Music Performance Trust Funds and the city of Albert Lea.
