Swimmers fall just short in dual at JM

ROCHESTER &045; Samantha Cole swept the sprints for the second meet in a row, but the Albert Lea High School girls’ swimming and diving team needed a few more firsts.
The Tigers won three events to Rochester John Marshall’s nine as Albert Lea fell 97-89 in a Big Nine dual meet at Rochester Thursday night.
&uot;It was a disappointing loss,&uot; said coach Lachelle Sandon, whose team fell to 0-3 in duals. &uot;We had awesome team unity, spirit and attitude.&uot;
Cole, a seventh-grader, easily won the sprint races, taking the 50-yard freestyle in 26.85 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 58.7.
The other individual first was by Brooke Kaasa, who took the 200 freestyle in 2:13.3.
Brooke Kaasa, Chelsea Cole, Lonna Vanderploeg and Samantha Cole won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:06.46.
The 200 medley relay team of Kaeli Wayne, Leah Matheson, Samantha Cole and Vanderploeg placed second.
Also placing second were Matheson, 200 individual medley, 2:37.31; Kassi Gaul, diving, 155.55 points; Chelsea Cole, 100 butterfly, 1:11.87; Wayne, 100 breast, 1:15.35; and the 200 freestyle relay team of Chelsea Cole, Krista Horejsi, Matheson and Whitney Walters.
Other Albert Lea places: Chelsea Cole, fourth, 200 free; Brittney Kaasa, fifth, 200 free; Amy Leach, fourth, 200 IM and fourth, 100 back; Vanderploeg, fourth, 50 free; Jackie Elwood, fifth, 50 free; Rachel Foster, fifth, diving; Alyssa Nelson, third, 100 butterfly and third, 100 back; Brianna Gold, fifth, 100 butterfly; Wayne, third, 100 free; Brooke Kaasa, third, 500 free; Rachael Hagen, fourth, 500 free; Brittney Kaasa, fifth, 500 free; Horejsi, third, 100 breast; Mariah McGill, fifth, 100 breast.
The Tigers are back in their home pool Monday for a 6 p.m. nonconference meet against St. Peter.
