Rebels sweep No Frills meet

FREEBORN &045; The cross country teams from United South Central and USC/Alden-Conger won the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the USC No Frills meet held at Oak View Golf Course near Freeborn on Tuesday.

Led by Justin Youngblom, Jake Stenzel, Eric Youngblom, and Chris Vondracek, the Rebels swept the first four places to dominate the boys’ race. Spencer Niebuhr, running fifth for the Rebels, finished 11th to complete the scoring for USC. There were 53 varsity runners.

Bob Schmitz, normally the No. 2 runner for the Rebels, was held out of the race due to a sore knee.

The Rebels won with 21 points, followed by NRHEG with 70, St. Peter 94, Sibley East 105, Waseca 148 and Elmore Academy 202.

The girls swept the first five places in their race for a perfect score of 15. Blooming Prairie was second with 56, followed by NRHEG with 67. St. Peter, Waseca and Sibley East did not field full

squads.

The Rebels’ Sara Bias, Jamie Klein, Megan Jensen, Becca Bryson and Kallie Rollenhagen took the lead immediately and, running in a pack, broke away from the rest of the field, building on their lead as the race progressed. The Rebels’ other varsity runners were Amelia Treptow, seventh; Lindsey Rauenhorst, 10th; and Michelle Sonnek, 11th. Twenty-seven girls ran in the varsity race.

The Rebels’ team time of 77:34 broke the USC record of 77:39 set Oct. 9, 1997.

The nearest non-USC/AC competitor finished 45 seconds behind Rollenhagen.

Joelle Elmer finished first in the Junior high girls’ one-mile race.

The Rebels run Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Gopher-Valley Conference meet at Mapleton.
