GLENVILLE &045; It was a valiant comeback by the Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team.
But an early deficit was too much to totally overcome.
The Wolverines trailed 24-9 at the end of the first quarter and spent the rest of the night trying to catch up. The closest they got was four points in a 60-52 loss to Houston at Glenville Friday night.
&uot;We had a chance at the end,&uot; said first-year Glenville-Emmons head coach Dan Fredrickson. &uot;The kids made a great effort. We grew up a lot tonight.&uot;
They struggled early though.
&uot;We didn’t come ready to play that first quarter,&uot; said Fredrickson. &uot;We kind of panicked against their press a little bit.&uot;
The Wolverines settled down in the second, cutting it to 35-23 at halftime. It was 46-36 after three periods.
The lead continued to dwindle in the fourth and, with about a minute remaining, the Wolverines had a chance to pull within two points but missed some easy shots under the basket. Then they had to foul and the Hurricanes made their free throws.
The Wolverines hurt themselves at the line in the fourth quarter, missing five free throws including the front end of four one-and-ones.
&uot;We played real good defense the whole game,&uot; said Fredrickson. &uot;But we got killed early on the boards.&uot;
Freshman guard Michael Greibrok scored 15 points on five three-point baskets. He also had four rebounds and three assists. Jake Hansen had 15 points, nine rebounds and a block, Michael Yocom 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals, Wade Flattum three points, four rebounds and two assists. Others: Matt Schilling three points, Matt Webb four points, three rebounds, Tyler Ziebell six assists.
&uot;Greibrok played a real nice floor game,&uot; said Fredrickson. &uot;Yocom did an outstanding job on man-to-man defense against one of the top two players in the conference, holding him to 12 points for the night and four in the second half.&uot;
The Wolverines host Lyle/Austin Pacelli Tuesday.
