The district court denied a request by an Albert Lea woman, who was charged in connection with a house raid in which 2.6 pounds of cocaine was found, to reduce her $200,000 bail Monday.
Carolina Pena, 33, of 327 W. Main St., was charged with first-degree possession of cocaine and conspiracy to sell.
The South Central Drug Task Force, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and Albert Lea Police Department executed a search warrant Nov. 15 and found the cocaine. Pena was arrested with Rafael Gallardo, 32, who also lived in the residence. The investigators found a handgun under a couch cushion and a digital gram scale in a bathroom. There was a surveillance camera watching the entrance of the house with a TV monitor in the kitchen, according to the police.
The defense attorney asked for the bail reduction for Pena so that she can be reunited with her two kids, claiming that Pena’s role in the offense was passive, and she hardly understood what was going on.
Judge James Broberg reaffirmed that a bail study will be conducted, bud did not grant the request. The defense also asked for a contested hearing, the date for which will be set later.
