Thorvald C. Sanderson, 81, Albert Lea

The funeral service for Thorvald C. Sanderson of Albert Lea, was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. John M. Henriksen officiated. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by Albert Lea Veteran’s Organizations. Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church.

Thorvald died on Monday morning, Dec. 16, 2002, at St. John’s Lutheran Home. He was 81.

He was born on Nov. 24, 1921, in rural Freeborn County

the son of John and Caroline (Hanson) Sanderson. He attended school in rural Freeborn County and in Alden. As a young man he worked on area farms.

Thorvald served our country in the U.S. Army from September of 1942 until

November of 1945. When he returned from the service he did road construction and helped construct Twin Lakes Electrical. He then began working at Rilco/Weyerhauser retiring in 1980. On March 19, 1955, he married Barbara Jensen in Mason City, Iowa.

Thorvald was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Elks, and was active in the local union where he served as steward for many years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping and traveling. Thorvald and Barbara lovingly did child care for their two granddaughters, Sara and Amy, which was a special part of Thorvald’s life.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Sanderson of Albert Lea; children: Kay Sanderson of Seattle, Wash., and Mark Sanderson and his wife Karen and their daughters, Sara and Amy, of Albert Lea; twin brother, Tenford (Sandy) Sanderson and his wife Ardus of Alden; brother, Clarence Sanderson and his wife Eleanor and family of California; sister-in-law, Lois and her husband Carlyle Madson of Hartland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Olive Sanderson and Julia and her husband Conrad Kilen, mother-in-law, Bernice Jensen; father-in-law, Llamoyne Jensen; and stepmother-in-law, Lydia Jensen.
