Lloyd L. Stussy, age 85, of Wells, died on Wednesday, Jan. 1. 2003, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, at the United Methodist Church in Wells. The Rev. Kenneth Haack will officiate. Visitation will be at the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells on Sunday, Jan. 5, from 3-7 p.m., and one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in the
Pine Island Cemetery, Pine Island, Minn. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
He was born March 9, 1917, the son of Walter and Esther (Maxon) Stussy on the family farm in rural Pine Island.
Lloyd grew up in Mantorville and graduated from Mantorville High School in 1934. He attended Rochester Junior College, graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1938, and received his master’s degree from Mankato State University. Lloyd taught at Tintah, Minn., Monticello, Minn., and came to Wells in 1942, where he was a teacher, coach and athletic director for over 50 years. After his retirement he taught drivers’ training, and 55 Alive classes. He was a member of the Wells United Methodist Church, Wells Lions Club, and active in the Minnesota State Coaches and Minnesota Athletic Directors associations. Lloyd was recognized with many awards including the Minnesota and National Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, the Minnesota Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Melvin Jones Award from the Lions Club. He also had the United South CentraI Gymnasium named after him in recognition of all his outstanding contributions to the Wells community.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Wells; one son, David (wife Lona) Stussy of Minneapolis; two daughters: Janice (husband Richard) Elster of Monterey, Calif., and Diane (husband Dick) Kalis of Mankato; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Maxine (husband Vinton) Harris of Kasson, and Irene (husband Clair) Felker of Mantorville; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Donald.
