Long after the game was finished, Ben Woodside remained on the basketball court at Albert Lea High School, accepting congratulations, posing for pictures and even signing autographs.
It was not just another night for the ALHS junior. It was a record-setting night. Multi-record-setting.
Woodside surpassed the 1,000 career point milestone, then broke the school record for most points in a career and the single-game mark as the Tigers defeated United South Central 65-53 in nonconference play at ALHS Tuesday.
Woodside finished with 41 points, surpassing by two the previous single-game record of 39 set by Paul Wilke Jr. in the 1950s. He now has 1,023 career points, breaking the old mark of 1,018 held by Jeff Schulz.
&uot;It feels real good, but overall, it was a big team effort,&uot; said Woodside, a 6-foot guard.
Tigers coach Matt Addington agreed.
&uot;It’s a great accomplishment for our team,&uot; he said. &uot;To be a part of a team with a player that scores 1,000 career points is significant, and our team should be proud.&uot;
Addington added that the Rebels should be proud of their effort.
&uot;It was a good matchup to prepare for section going against a very athletic and aggressive USC team,&uot; said Addington. &uot;We just needed to make progress tonight with some things we’re doing, and we were able to do that.&uot;
After an 8-8 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers led 24-18 at halftime and 43-27 after three periods.
Woodside reached the 1,000-point mark early in the third quarter. The Rebels left him alone outside the three-point line and he dribbled to his left, pulled up inside the arc, and drilled a jump shot.
The game was stopped momentarily as Addington presented Woodside a commemorative basketball signed by his teammates.
Woodside had some unfamiliar teammates when he broke the career and game records. Both coaches cleared their bench &045; except for Woodside &045; with the Tigers leading 56-36 with 4:12 remaining.
Woodside weaved through defenders with an acrobatic layup to run his total to 38 with 3:50 left.
He did almost the exact same thing the next time up the court, making the basket and drawing a foul. Woodside pumped his fist in the air after the hoop, which broke both the single-game and career scoring records for ALHS. He added the free throw and joined the other starters on the bench.
Woodside, the Tribune’s Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year as a sophomore, earlier this season set the ALHS single-season scoring record.
Also scoring for the Tigers Tuesday were Tom Munden with six points, Mike Behrends five, Tyler Young four, Ryan Moore three. Young and Behrends both had six rebounds.
Ryan Treptow led USC with 12 points. Chris Vondracek scored 10, Ben Wetzell six.
The Tigers finish the regular season Friday at Rochester Century.
