Tuesday night Albert Lea junior Ben Woodside played a game he won’t soon forget. Not only did he break a career milestone most seniors would envy, he also broke two school records that have stood for years. With a full year left to play, he’ll go down as one of the greatest basketball players in the city’s history.
In the third quarter of the Tigers’ win over United South Central, Woodside surpassed the 1,000 point mark for his career. On a night when even Los Angeles Laker Kobe Byant did not score 40 points for the first time in 10 games, Woodside scored 41, breaking a school record set a half-century ago. And by the time the game was done, he had raised his career total to 1,023 points, another school record.
Woodside deserves recognition for his astounding athletic feats as well as his classroom success; he was also on the &uot;A&uot; honor roll last quarter at the high school.
All the Tigers, too, can be proud. Basketball is a team sport, and hard work by all the players and Coach Matt Addington make performances like Woodside’s possible.
It seems clear that Woodside has the skills to go far in basketball and in life, and he makes the school and the community proud.
