Jon Schmitz paused for a second, letting it sink in.
&uot;What a race it was,&uot; said the Albert Lea High School boys’ swimming and diving coach. &uot;They wanted that pool record, and man did they do.&uot;
They, in this case, are Mitch Johnson, Colton Jensen, Ryan Lowe and Ethan Berg, and they put an exclamation point on the end of the regular season for the Tigers Friday night. The foursome won the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, in a pool-record 3:22.35 as the Tigers defeated Farmington 96-85 in a nonconference dual meet in the ALHS pool.
The Tigers finished 11-0 in duals, 9-0 in the Big Nine.
&uot;It’s great going 11-0 again,&uot; said Schmitz. &uot;We haven’t gone undefeated for a while. It’s been a great year.&uot;
But it’s far from over. The Tigers are looking to send a large contingent to state. But first is the Big Nine meet, set for Thursday at 4:30 at the Rochester Recreation Center, and the Tigers are aiming for the title.
&uot;It’s just nice to be in this position again,&uot; said Schmitz.
The time for the 400 freestyle relay is the eighth best in the state so far this season, according to Schmitz, and the second best in Class A. It was more than 29 seconds faster than Farmington’s top relay, and it was one of three relay wins for the Tigers Friday.
Berg, Ben Schreiber, Ben Matheson and Josh Elwood won the 200 medley in 1:45.32 while Johnson, Lowe, Jensen and Matheson took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:34.55.
Three Tigers won two individual events each: Johnson, 200 free, 1:50.01 and 100 free, 50.09 seconds; Berg, 50 free, 23.66 and 100 butterfly, 57.44; Schreiber, 200 individual medley, 2:12.53 and 100 breast, 1:05.19.
Also: Jensen, first, 500 free, 5:22.93 and second, 200 free, 1:54.83; Elwood, third, 200 IM, 2:21.12 and second, 100 butterfly, 1:00.36; Matheson, second, 200 IM, 2:14.03; Lowe, second, 50 free, 24.32; Chris Jackson, fourth, 50 free, 24.85 and third, 100 breast, 1:07.52; Matt Hagen, fourth, 100 free, 1:00.49; Jon VanErkel, fourth, 500 free, 6:11.91; Casey Ciffra, fifth, 100 back, 1:14.59; Sean Harms, third, 100 back, 1:05.2.
Farmington won the junior varsity meet 108-60. Firsts for the Tigers were by Hagen, 200 free; Harms, 50 free; Tyler Peterson, 100 butterfly; and Andrew Klick, 500 free.
