Dorothy Mae Fern (Nordstrom) Maywald, age 71, died Friday, March 21, 2003 at her home after a 14-year journey with breast cancer. Her husband and daughter were by her side.
Dorothy was born Oct. 14, 1931 in Bathgate, N.D., the daughter of James and Magdalena (Rau) Nordstrom. She graduated from Grand Forks High School in 1949.
Dorothy married Richard Howard Maywald in 1957, and they had two daughters, Ruth and Julia. Their life together was filled with adventure, as Richard’s career as a geophysicist took them to Louisiana, Texas, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Colorado, Indonesia, Norway, Nigeria and Trinidad. Despite this exotic lifestyle, her heart remained first with her family and at their final home in Hartland, Minn.
Dorothy was a caring, thoughtful and quietly determined person. She loved all children, and she especially adored her two grandchildren. A prolific reader, she enjoyed mystery novels, biographies and the classics. Dorothy was a woman of deep Christian faith and was an active member of Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, Dorcas Circle, Ladies Aid, Senior Citizens and the Audubon Society. In recent years, Dorothy and Richard divided their time between their home in Hartland, their cabin in northern Minnesota and their daughter’s home in Seattle. She will be deeply missed.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Richard Maywald of Hartland; daughter Julia Maywald, son-in-law Tom Donlea; two grandchildren, Leo and Siri Donlea, of Seattle and brother Harold Nordstrom, of Huron, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Magdalena Nordstrom, brother Fred Nordstrom and her daughter, Ruth Maywald.
A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2003 and the funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2003, both at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Hartland. Family services are provided by Bonnerup Funeral Services in Albert Lea. Memorials may be directed to the Albert Lea Regional Medical Center Cancer Fund or to Cross of Glory Lutheran Church.
