Gwendolyn Ardell Verdoorn, 89, Hollandale

Funeral services for Gwendolyn A. Verdoorn, age 89, of Hollandale, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at the Hollandale Reformed Church. The Rev. Mark Volkers will officiate. Interment will be in the Hollandale Cemetery. Visitation is 5 – 7 p.m. today, April 1, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home.
Gwendolyn died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center.
Gwendolyn Ardell Verdoorn was born Sept. 25, 1913, to Lewis and Grace (Dowden) Pickell in Ocheydon, Iowa. She was 14 when the family moved to Hollandale in February 1927. Gwen graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1931 and attended St. Olaf College for two years. On Sept. 14, 1935, she was united in marriage to Cornelius Emery Verdoorn in Northwood, Iowa. Gwen was employed as a clerk for District #241 for a number of years. She was a Girl Scout leader and Den Mother and had been treasurer of the Tri-County Girl Scout Board. Gwen was a member of the Hollandale Reformed Church, the Tuesday Literary Club in Albert Lea, the DAR, and a charter member of the museum in Hollandale. She enjoyed reading and genealogy.
Survivors include her son, Daryl (Sid) and his wife Carol; three grandsons: Jay and wife Corby, Jeff and wife Julie, and Jim and wife Stephanie; five great-grandchildren: Fraley, Blake, Jacob, Sarah and Samuel; brother, William and wife Betty Pickell of Naples, Fla.; and sister, Betty Lou Pickell Sandvig of Sun Lakes, Ariz.
Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Barbara Posthumus; brother, Wayne Pickell; and sister, Vivian VanZanten.
