MABEL &045; The Glenville-Emmons Wolverines were having trouble making contact with the baseball but, as it turned out, they didn’t have to make a whole lot.
Mitch Meier wasn’t allowing Mabel-Canton anything.
The senior left-hander pitched a three-hit shutout Thursday as the Wolverines won 1-0 in a Southeast Conference game at Mabel.
&uot;Mitch pitched an excellent game again,&uot; said Glenville-Emmons coach Louie Toulouse, whose team improved to 3-0 in the SEC and 4-3 overall. &uot;He just shut their bats down. He gave us a chance to win the game even though we were not making contact very good.&uot;
Meier, the Tribune’s Baseball Player of the Year as a junior, was in complete command while striking out 12 batters. He did not issue a walk.
The Wolverines, meanwhile, had a baserunner on third with less than two outs in each of the first three innings but couldn’t score any of them.
They got the same situation in the fourth, when Meier drew a leadoff walk. Courtesy runner Devan Kaasa stole second and Jake Hansen followed with the biggest hit of the night, a run-scoring triple.
Alex Hansen finished 3-for-4. Jake Hansen and Kaasa had the Wolverines’ only other hits.
The Wolverines are off until Tuesday, when they travel to Lyle to face Lyle/Austin Pacelli in a 4:30 p.m. SEC game.
