If you are looking for someone to wire your house or make a cabinet for you, you don’t have to look any farther than Albert Lea High School.

Two seniors, Zach Christenson and Brett Haase, both 18, are headed to the national championship for wiring and cabinet making, respectively.

&uot;I’ve had both of these guys for the past four years,&uot; said Bill Webb, who teaches industrial technology at ALHS. &uot;They’re both very good students. I’ve developed a very good relationship with them. It’s almost like they are your own kids.&uot;

For the past three years, Albert Lea has consistently won the state Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Inc. (VICA) competition and has sent students on the national championship.

This year, Christenson and Haase will be attending the National VICA contest in Kansas City, Mo., June 23-29.

Christenson will be doing a wiring contest.

&uot;Basically they just give you a wall and give you plans on what to wire up,&uot; he said. The students hook up outlets, light switches, ranges and much more.

For cabinetry, the competitors are given a design plan and oversized wood, and must use those pieces to put together a cabinet. The national cabinetry competition lasts for eight hours.

Webb said the projects are designed to be unfinishable within that time so that judges can more easily pick a winner.

Both students were confident about nationals, but didn’t make any predictions.

They both can win some great prizes.

&uot;If you win it all you get a full ride to any vocational school you want,&uot; Haase said.

But neither seemed overly excited about winning. They seem to be looking forward more to the week-long vacation.

Both plan on attending Riverland Community College’s electrician school next year.
