50 years ago – 1953

– In the first round game of the Minnesota State High School Baseball Tournament Wells defeated Moorhead 2-1 with Marv Schultz the winning pitcher. Wells was defeated by St. Paul Washington 3-2 in the semifinal game.

– Austin, behind the two-hit pitching of Dave Underhill, defeated the Albert Lea Junior American Legion baseball team 9-1. Albert Lea’s two hits were by Alan Madson and Lowell Brady.

– Hollandale scored an 8-3 win over Hartland in the Freeborn County Softball League. Winning pitcher Ralph Stegenga threw a four-hitter and losing pitcher Kenny Sibilrud hit a three-run home run.

– Paul Mork pitched a no-hitter for Kiester in a 3-1 victory over Bricelyn in a Junior American Legion baseball game.

25 years ago – 1978

– The Albert Lea VFW baseball team defeated Austin 7-0 behind the no-hit pitching of John Nelson. Albert Lea improved to an 8-3 record for the season.

– In C National League slow-pitch softball, Greg Recknor hit two home runs for Hartland in a 15-4 win over Brown Trucking.

– Pete Boys defeated Phillips Grain of Hartland 15-5 in World League slow-pitch. Brad Williamson and Rich Olson homered for Pete Boys.

– Stadheim Sanitation defeated Harold’s Bar 16-10 in Laker League slow-pitch. Rick Rieman, Pat Cottrell, John Skaar and Al Skaar hit home runs for Stadheim.

10 years ago – 1993

– Named to the Big Nine All-Conference Baseball Team from Albert Lea High School were Mark Willmert, Dan Willmert, Tom Drasher and Reid Olson. Elected co-captains for the 1994 ALHS team were Trent Struck and Mac Noland.

– Receiving ALHS girls’ golf awards for the best scoring average were: Seniors – Jodi Mack; Juniors – Lisa Rocklin; and Sophomores – Christine Strecker. Donna Boom received the Most Valuable Award.

– The Lake Mills High School softball team defeated West Hancock 14-3. Karla Olson was the winning pitcher and also had three hits.
