DODGE CENTER &045; Leading 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Glenville-Emmons American Legion baseball team was well on its way to upsetting top-seeded Dodge Center in the opening round of the sub-district tournament.
Four singles and one home run later, G-E was on its way home with a gut-wrenching defeat.
Dodge Center rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh Monday night to defeat eighth-seeded G-E 6-4.
&uot;We played real well the first six innings,&uot; said coach Louie Toulouse. &uot;In fact, we played pretty well the whole game.&uot;
But, in the bottom of the seventh, Dodge Center got two bloop singles and, with two outs, a third single to score a run and pull within 4-3. On a 3-2 count, Dodge Center’s No. 3 hitter connected on a three-run, walk-off home run.
Dodge Center’s other run came in the second, and its 1-0 lead stood until the sixth, when G-E plated a pair of runs and added two more in the top of the seventh.
Mitch Meier went the distance on the mound for G-E. Dodge Center had five earned runs on seven hits as Meier struck out seven and walked one.
Robert Flugum was 2-for-3 to lead the offense. Wade Flattum and Meier each had a hit and drove in a run.
G-E ended the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Kasson at Emmons.
Michael Greibrok pitched a two-hitter, finishing with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Kasson’s lone run was unearned.
Nathan Cooper had a double and an RBI while going 2-for-3. Getting one hit each were Flattum, Flugum, Devan Kaasa and Casey Long.
&uot;We played awful good defense, even though we had four errors,&uot; said Toulouse. &uot;It was a nice win, even though we were shorthanded.&uot;
G-E, 5-11, plays its next game in the double-elimination sub-district tournament tonight at New Richland.
