U-11 girls win district tourney

The Albert Lea U-11 girls soccer team captured the MYSA South District championship last weekend at Lakeville, advancing to state.
Second seeded, Albert Lea enjoyed a first-round bye on Saturday morning and then faced an Eagan team. Sophie Miller, Morgan Stadheim, Kaitlin Cope, Ellie Johnson and Elizabeth Winkels played dominating defense. Abbey Arends scored off an assist from Sophie Miller. Miller added a goal off an assist from Arends. Albert Lea won 2-0.
Albert Lea played a tough Rochester team for the title. Arends started the scoring with a breakaway. Miller scored off a direct kick. In the second half, Arends took a Miller pass and scored.
Albert Lea’s defense stepped up to the challenge and held for a 3-2 win.
