Freeborn County charged a convicted murderer with first-degree criminal sexual conduct Wednesday for allegedly raping a college student staying at the Guesthouse Inn on Main Street.

According to the criminal complaint:

Donald Dewayne Brantley, 49, used a fork and knife to threaten the 19-year-old as he anally raped him.

The two met at the Guesthouse Inn, where they were both staying. The victim and his friends met Brantley and his friend, and they all went to the bowling alley next door.

But the victim later went back to the hotel to drink with Brantley and his friend in Brantley’s room.

When Brantley’s friend left, Brantley put a knife and fork to the victim’s neck and told him to remove his pants. The victim thought maybe he was joking, but Brantley began removing his own pants and counting to five, at which point he said he’d slit the victim’s throat, the complaint said. After the count of three, the victim complied.

The victim was then raped. Brantley told the victim that he’d be killed by him or someone else if he ever told anyone. Afterward, the victim left the room and call 9-1-1.

Five Albert Lea police officers responded to the call and arrested Brantley.

A Tennessee court convicted Brantley of second-degree murder in 1980. He was sentenced to 40 years but was released in 1995. He served another two years in Tennessee for aggravated burglary and has been convicted of other crimes, including grand larceny.

Brantley was in Albert Lea working for an out-of-town painting company.

Because of his criminal record and the fact that Brantley has no ties to the area nor a permanent address, County Attorney Craig Nelson recommended $200,000 bail, which Judge John Chesterman approved.

During his arraignment, Brantley took issue with the $200,000 bail. He said he was upset that Nelson was using his past against him.
