Corn, music highlight Kernel Days in Wells

For the past 52 years, Wells summers have officially come to an end at what could be the largest corn feeding in southern Minnesota.
Last year, event coordinators said that two tons of corn were brought in for their annual free sweet corn lunch.
The corn and the name of the festival, Kernel Days, came because a Del Monte factory that canned corn used to operate in Wells, according to Dawn Stenzel, executive director for the Wells Chamber of Commerce.
Though the corn is a big draw, Stenzel said other events should bring in crowds.
&uot;I would say ours is different than most,&uot; she said about the town festival. &uot;But basically, it’s just good family entertainment.&uot;
Stenzel said there will be entertainment all weekend with carnival games, a car show, a Barta pedal pull and more.
Four area bands &045; Bloodshot, Phist, Soul Solutions and Phaz Three &045; made up of high school and college students, will have a battle of the bands. Stenzel said the concert will take place during the teen dance on Friday night from 8 to 11 p.m. She said most of the bands play Christian music.
Saturday, roadsters both young and old will take to the streets with a pedal pull at 11 a.m. and a car show starting at 10 a.m.
The Spotlight Dancers will put on a show at 7 p.m. in Thompson Park, which will be followed by the fireman’s street dance that starts at 8:30 p.m. and will last into the night.
Sunday, the day will start with a VFW pancake breakfast. After a parade at noon, the corn feed will begin.
After the lunch, the Jim Lawrence Orchestra and the a capella group Four Shadow will put on a concert.
&uot;I hope that people will come out and have fun,&uot; Stenzel said. &uot;Everybody always has such a good time.&uot;
