Editorial: Boat trips for seniors were a worthy cause

It’s always refreshing to see people who take the initiative to make a difference for other people. That’s exactly what a local couple has done to bring a nice recreational opportunity to residents of nursing homes who may not get out as much as they’d like.

Dick and Marlys Webber started raising money to rent out the Pelican Breeze pontoon boat for groups from nursing homes in the Freeborn County area. They were overwhelmed with support after presenting their program to local service clubs, members of which responded with enough donations to pay for eight cruises on Albert Lea Lake. And eight cruises can make a lot of happy people.

The Pelican Breeze is a unique experience, letting people see first-hand the natural beauty found around Albert Lea Lake. It’s an view you simply can’t get just driving by. Finding a way for nursing-home residents to experience this was a great idea, and credit is deserved all around &045; with the Webbers and the people who donated to the cause &045; for making it happen.
