Weekend Planner: Events fill weekend schedule

The Freeborn County DFL Committee will hold its annual spaghetti supper from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at the Union Center, 404 E. Main St., Albert Lea. Cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children 4 to 10 years, and kids 3 years and under eat free, or $10 per family. Guest speakers will be Dan Sparks, John Hottinger and Mike Hatch.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Sept. 12
– The North Star Corn Maze near Northwood, Iowa, is open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Concessions, a gift shop and toilets are available on the grounds. To get to the corn maze, travel south on Highway 65 and watch for the signs.
-Skyline Mall will host Mall Mission Days during mall hours. It’s one big bazaar where non-profit organizations, church groups and service clubs will sell baked goods, lefse, cookbooks, sweatshirts, garden produce and crafts to raise funds for the projects they sponsor.
-The Herfindahl Gallery in the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., features the works of Cuban immigrant Luis Chamizo and a piece of work by his son Luis. Gallery hours are noon-4 p.m. There is no charge to attend.
-The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required before 4 p.m. Friday. Call 383-2630.
Saturday, Sept. 13
-Glenville First Lutheran Church Women will hold their annual fall festival. Coffee and rolls will be served from 8-11 a.m. and a meatball dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost for the meal is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children ages 5-10. Preschoolers eat free. There will also be raffles, and crafts, produce and baked goods will be available for sale.
-The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market is open in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street from 9 a.m.-noon.
-Mall Mission Days continue at Skyline Mall during mall hours.

-Community Lutheran Church of Geneva will sponsor a burger and corn feed at the Geneva Community Center from 5-7 p.m. There will also be an auction at 3 p.m. with many new and used items. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will match funds.
-The Hartland Fire Department will hold its annual pork chop feed from 5-7 p.m. at the Hartland Community Center. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Proceeds will go toward fire-fighting equipment and training. The event is sponsored by the Hartland Fire Fighters Relief Association.

-Northbridge Mall will host a New Star Discovery Most Beautiful Baby Contest for boys and girls, ages newborn to 6 years old. (No make-up is allowed.) Registration is from noon-1 p.m. and the contest starts at approximately 1:15 p.m. For more information, call 1-877-330-Baby, or visit the Web site, www.newstardiscovery.com. Entry forms are also available at the mall.
-An open house reception for the exhibit of Cuban immigrant Luis Chamizo will be held at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., from 1-3 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.
-The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.
-Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Hartland will host the musical &uot;Solid Rock Cafe&uot; at 7 p.m. Performers are students from the New Richland and Hartland areas and represent several area churches. The band and directors are the GEM Girls from Youth for Christ.
