Events planned to mark VFW Day

VFW 447 Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Union Center Club, 404 E. Main St., Albert Lea.
The day’s events begin with a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon. Proceeds will be used to help support the VFW’s baseball and hockey teams.
Other events throughout the day and evening will help support the VFW Color Guard. The public is invited to attend.
A pool tournament begins at noon. Sign up at the Union Center to participate.
There will be sloppy joes served from noon-5 p.m., and a 500 card tournament begins at 1 p.m. To enter, contact Forrie Claussen at 373-9510.
A spaghetti dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. Then people can dance to the music of Arlen Nesset from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Friday, Oct. 17
-Skyline Mall will hold a fall craft sale during mall hours.
-The North Star Corn Maze near Northwood, Iowa, is open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
Concessions, a gift shop and toilets are available on the grounds. To get to the corn maze, travel south on Highway 65 and watch for the signs.
-The Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., features the quilts, wearable art and wall hangings of the Larson sisters, Sharon Morreim, Jan Prescher, Joyce Stenzel and Merle Stensrud. Gallery hours are noon-4 p.m. Admission is $1.
-The Pumpkin Patch of Albert Lea is open from 1-6 p.m. The patch features pumpkin games and displays, pumpkin house, farm animals and spook house. To get to the patch, go two miles west of Wal-Mart on County Road 46. Turn left on County Road 71. Go 1/2 mile south, and watch for signs on the right.
-The Austin Singles will have a dance from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. at the Blooming Prairie Servicemen’s Club. Memories Band will play. Alumni are welcome.
Saturday, Oct. 18
-The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market is open in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street from 9 a.m.-noon.

-The Emmons firefighters will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Emmons School cafeteria. For a freewill donation, pancakes, eggs, sausage and beverage will be served.
