Dale Howard Attig, age 84, died Dec. 27, 2003, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin.

Dale was born to Adam and Olive (Eisenmann) Attig on March 16, 1919, at Woden, Iowa. His mother died when he was two years old and his father moved to a farm south of Albert Lea. In 1929 his family moved south of Glenville where Dale attended Riverside School and later Albert Lea High School.

In April 1942 Dale entered the US Army serving as an infantryman with the Thunderbird 45th Division, Company G, 180th Infantry. He served under Generals Clark and Patton. He was wounded twice and was awarded the Purple Heart and four Oak Leaf Clusters, Combat Infantry Badge, Sliver Star, Bronze Star, the Distinguished Service Medal, the American Theater Campaign Medal, ETO Campaign Medal, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medal. Dale was proud to serve his country. He also had two sons in the Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict and one in the Air Force post Vietnam.

Dale’s tour of duty during World War II included the Invasion of Sicily, Anzio, Palermo and Salerno, Italy and in France to the German border. He was dicharged from the Army in 1945.

On Sept. 7, 1946 he was united in marriage to Adella Weisensel in Albert Lea. They farmed south of London. He loved the land, fed cattle and hogs, and raised corn, oats and hay. He instilled the land values in his family with their help.

The farmstead was one he was very proud of. He sadly retired in 1987 when he was no longer able to continue, but helped at planting and harvesting time.

He is survived by his wife, Adella of Austin; three sons and daughters-in-law: Daniel (Cheryl) Attig of Waseca, Joseph (Debbie) Attig of Albert Lea, and Roy (Joni) Attig of Loami, Ill.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Diane (Dean) Anderson of Austin, and Rosina (Mark) Fett of Northwood, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Holst of Lyle; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry (Louise) Attig of Glenville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Geneva Olson of Glenville, and Wanda (Alfred) Hemann of Austin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Carl and Kurtis; a great-granddaughter, Courtney Attig; his parents; and two brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Crane Community Chapel in Austin with the Rev. Randy Petersen officiating.

Interment will be in Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle, with military rites by the Lyle American Legion Post #105. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Mayer Funeral Home in Austin, and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
