Local, area teams have busy holiday slate

School may not be in session, but local and area high school teams are busy with holiday tournaments.

Locally, there’s the 2nd Annual Tiger Classic featuring four boys’ and girls’ basketball teams including the local Tigers, Hills-Beaver Creek, Minneapolis South and Bethlehem Academy of Faribault.

€ Friday, Dec. 26 &045; Afternoon session (girls), 1 p.m. Minneapolis South vs. Faribault Bethlehem Academy; 3 p.m. Albert Lea vs.

Hills-Beaver Creek; Evening session (boys), 6:30 Minneapolis South vs. Faribault Bethlehem Academy; 8:30 Albert Lea vs. Hills-Beaver Creek;

€ Saturday, Dec. 27 &045; Afternoon session (girls) 1 p.m. Third-place game; 3 p.m. Championship game; Evening session (boys) 6:30 Third-place game; 8:30 Championship game.

The Tiger Holiday Classic is hosted by the Albert Lea Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Boosters. The tournament Sponsors are Hy-Vee and Schweigert Foods. Chairmen of this year’s Tiger Classic are Mike Moore, Gary Schrad and Dennis Dieser.

Admission will be $7 per session for adults and $5 per session for students. All-day admission for both sessions per day is $10. Regular-season and senior passes will not be honored. All profits from the tournament will be used for the benefit of the Albert Lea boys’ and girls’ basketball programs.

The Albert Lea High School girls’ hockey squad competes in the Schwan’s Cup at Blaine, a tournament that features many of the state’s top teams. The Tigers meet Hutchinson at 4:30 today in the opening round.

The Schwan’s Cup continues Saturday and Monday.

Tonight and tomorrow, the Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team and NRHEG girls’ basketball team compete in the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Rotary Tournament, and the NRHEG boys’ basketball team plays in the Mankato Bethany Invitational.

On Saturday, the NRHEG gymnastics team travels to the St. James Invitational.

The action wraps up

next week, with the ALHS boys’ hockey team playing in the Bob Nelson Classic hosted by Blake on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The United South Central boys’ basketball team hosts its Rebel Classic Monday and Tuesday.
