Roy W. DeVries, 89, Stayton, Ore.,and Hollandale

Roy W. DeVries, age 89, of Stayton, Ore., formerly of Hollandale, died Saturday, March 13, 2004.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. today, March 16, at the Weddle Funeral Chapel, Stayton. Visitation was 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton. Burial is in Lone Oak Cemetery, Stayton.
Roy was born July 18, 1914, in Newkirk, Iowa, to farmers who were immigrants from Holland. His family was one of the first settlers in Hollandale in 1922, where he lived most of his life until 1964.
During that time he worked for the railroad and lived briefly with family in Green Bay, Wis. Also, during that time he worked at Thule, Greenland, building an air force base for three years.
Roy worked for Diekema Construction while living in Albert Lea. He moved to Stayton, Ore., in 1964 and worked as a construction superintendent.
He married Kathryn &uot;Kay&uot; Habin Louters on Dec. 28, 1971.
Roy was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Aumsville, Ore. He enjoyed woodcrafting and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn &uot;Kay&uot; DeVries; three daughters: Jan
Hogren of Salem,. Ore., Bonnie Danielson of LeSueur, Minn., and Jill DeVries of Salem, Ore.; five stepdaughters: Merikay Bonnema of Virginia Beach, Va., Annette Kaasa of Albert Lea, Roberta Bonnema of Hollandale, Jan Warner of Cave Junction, Ore., and Wilburta Debnam of Monmouth, Ore.; two sisters: Marie Harrington of Salem, Ore., and Ethel VanZanten of Troutdale, Ore.; brother-in-law, Henry Verdoorn of Hollandale; 11 grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Jane Wagner in 1971; brothers: Arie (Doc), Ed and Henry DeVries; and sisters: Eva Verdoorn and Dena Sherman.
