Editorial: Intersection antics nets enough cash for 2004 fireworks

Kudos to the numerous volunteers who stood on the corner of Main and Broadway Friday to collect money for the July 4th holiday fireworks display.
They ran up to vehicles stopped at the light to ask for a donation and by 11 a.m. had raised more than $11,000 of the $15,000 goal. In the end, the group collected $17,407.88.
While the antics of the volunteers were fun to watch and perhaps encouraged more than one reluctant donation, let’s not overlook the big-hearted people who gladly turned their pockets out or dug to the bottom of their purses for change. Corporate donations, always appreciated, also helped the cause and the money will provide a mighty fine fireworks display for residents to enjoy.
This is not the first year volunteers have raised money for the holiday display, and we hope it won’t be the last.
Forced to find a way to raise money when budget cuts took away funding, the brainstorm has proved a popular one-day, way to continue the holiday tradition.
Not to take anything away from the idea, it occurs to us if so much money can be raised in a day, why have not other groups tried it?
We’re not suggesting charities start standing on street corners every week, or even every month, but would residents really object to a similar fundraiser for a worthy cause a couple times a year? Given their generous nature, we don’t think so.
