Editorial: It’s time to let rest earlier county decision

At this point, protesting the destruction of the Freeborn County ’54 building is wasted energy. The decision was debated, discussed, protested &045; and most importantly, voted upon when the courthouse plan was implemented.

After appropriate time for public response, the decision was made to tear it down. Commissioners even reviewed their decision, but the demolition was accepted for a number of reasons, not the least of which is finances. In many cases, remodeling an existing structure, particularly one constructed under earlier building codes, is more expensive to remodel with today’s guidelines.

That residents are appreciative of construction standards back in the early 1950s is commendable. But things have changed. Discussion shouldn’t center on whether the building is attractive or well-built. Commissioner Belshan questioned if there might be some need for the extra space at some point in the future. It’s entirely possible county services may need more space in the distant future. However, the courthouse plan has taken such expansion needs into account. The new building should serve the needs of county residents far into the future.

We elected our commissioners to make tough decisions, such as the demolition of an outdated building, based on a variety of factors, not just sentimentality.

To hold this decision against the commissioners now is simply unfair. It’s time to let this discussion be put to rest.
