Mavis Maxine Minton Booen of Richfield, born Dec. 15, 1917, in Hendricks, Minn., passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina, after a long illness.
Mavis met her husband, Sherman P. Booen, when he was working at the Watertown, S.D., radio station. They were married 66 years ago on June I1.
World war II sent Capt. Booen to the European and Africa Theatres. At home, Mavis served her country in an Albert Lea meat packing plant. She also saw her husband off to the Korean Conflict.
Mavis loved to fly with Sherm (who became a pilot in 1940) and they spent many wonderful years flying their plane across the country. World-spanning commercial trips also highlighted their life together. About the same time that Sherm began his “World of Aviation” television show on WCCO-TV, he and Mavis started the “Minnesota Flyer” magazine. She managed all the business affairs while Sherm was off getting aviation stories. In 1974 Mavis was honored for her contributions to general aviation and was named “Mrs. Aviation” by the Minnesota Aviation Trades Association.
Mavis was a cheerful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
She is survived by husband, Sherman; daughter, Boni & husband Bill Roberts; granddaughter, D’Ette Roberts-Millinix and husband Jeff; sister- and brother-in-law, Maryleone and Carl Sonksen; nieces: Beverly LaBrie Troske and husband Lee; Melva Jurgensen Parsons and husband Don; nephews: Maurice LaBrie and wife Carol, and Harold Jurgensen; and special friends, Mike and
Patty Steuck.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 24, at the Richfield United Methodist Church, 58th St. and Lyndale Ave. S. with lunch to follow.
