Joan June Carlson, 71, Hollandale

Funeral services for Joan June Carlson, of Hollandale, will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Hollandale Christian Reformed Church in Hollandale. The Rev. Gary Brouwers will officiate. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Glenville.

Mrs. Carlson died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 18, 2004, at her home in Hollandale. She was 71 years of age.

Joan was born June 15, 1933, in Gaylord, Minn., the daughter of Armin and Della (Bengtson) Hackbarth. She attended public school in Gaylord. She had been a resident of Albert Lea most of her life. On July 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to Edward (Pinky) Carlson in Albert Lea. The past year and a half she had resided in Hollandale.

Joan was a homemaker most of her life, but did work for a time at Wedge Nursery and recently retired from the Salvation Army after 8 years. Joan enjoyed collecting jewelry, cross word puzzles, garage sales, dolls, antiques, hot sauce (the hotter the better!!!), rock and roll music, riding her golf cart around Hollandale, and her pet cat, Dusty.

Joan is survived by her children: Edward Carlson Jr. of Albert Lea, Donna and her husband Bob McClelland of Joice, Iowa, Shirley and her husband Mark Behrends of Albert Lea, Deb and her husband Dan Shaw of Hartland, Vicki Schultz of Albert Lea, and Renae and her husband Lee Zuniga of Hollandale; and grandchildren: Rani Peterson of Las Vegas, Nev., Curtis and Tammy Wyant of Mason City, Iowa, Stacy and John Judd of Albert Lea, Dan Shaw and Anissa Carlson of Albert Lea, Jeremy, Nicholas and Melony Olson of Albert Lea, Cody Johnson of Albert Lea, and Veronika and Tommy Zuniga of Hollandale. There are 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Donald Hackbarth in California.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pinky; sister, Betty in infancy; grandchildren: Gary Allen Wyant in 1970, and Felicia Godtland in 1972; and one son-in-law, Scott Schultz, in 1997.
