ALDEN &045;&160;It was a successful year for the Alden-Conger B-squad girls’ basketball team as it recently finished the season with a record of 13-6.
The eight player roster of two sophomores and six freshmen had many highlights, according to third-year coach Tom Jones.
The first was an exciting one-point win over Medford in late December, which began a run of 10 wins over the last 13 games. Playing with only six players, the Knights withstood a flurry of last second shots by Medford to get the 32-31 win.
A-C’s next game also was a highlight, according to coach Jones. After trailing previously unbeaten Martin County West by as much as 10 points in the second half, a late rally that ended with a basket by Megan Miller off a steal from Nadean Krueger with less than 10 seconds in the game gave the Knights a 27-26 win.
The ninth-graders on the squad also pointed out that a 49-24 win over Cleveland was also a highlight, as the Crusaders had defeated them as eighth graders a year ago.
&8220;I’ve always been a believer that success breeds success in high school sports and these young ladies had a successful volleyball season and that carried right through the basketball season,” said Jones. &8220;I’m also very proud of them for all being honor roll students as well,&8221; Jones said. &8220;If these girls continue working on their individual skills during the off season, they will have the opportunity to be successful at the varsity level next year.&8221;
